Say Goodby to Dental Anxiety!

Dental Anxiety is more common than most people think and affects individuals of all ages. Whether it be a result of a previous experience, dental pain, or trouble with the discomfort of having another person put metal objects in your mouth, dental anxiety keeps thousands of people from receiving the dental care they desperately need.

Without proper dental care, regular cleanings, and tooth treatments, many problems can arise that go far beyond tooth decay. This doesn’t mean that you must force yourself into the dental office and suffer through the entire procedure. In fact, because of how common this issue is, dentists have perfected several wonderful methods of ensuring a calm and pleasant experience to suit everyone’s needs.

Here at Matthews Smiles, we have gone to great lengths to ensure that every patient has a wonderful experience. From the bright and calm atmosphere of the office, to a television set hanging above each dental chare, everything has been constructed to put both your mind and body at ease. And when a little extra effort needs to be provided to ensure a good experience, we provide all our patients the option to experience sedation dentistry.

About Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is far more simple than most people think. Sedation dentistry uses specific mediation to assist patients with dental anxiety or issues with pain/discomfort while receiving dental care. Patients are usually awake for the entire experience which is broken into several different levels.

The different types of sedation include: Minimal sedation, moderate sedation, deep sedation, and general anesthesia.

Minimal Sedation – the patient is awake but relaxed as they undergo their dental procedure.

Moderate Sedation – a more common form of sedation which may cause you to slur your words and will most likely result in you not remembering much of the procedure.

Deep Sedation – places the patient on the edge of consciousness where they can still be awakened but will mostly unconscious during the procedure.

General Anesthesia – patients are completely unconscious during the entire process. This final category usually falls under the term general anesthesia. This is when medications put you in a deep sleep and you can not be easily awakened until the effects of the medication wear off or reversed.

More Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Depending on what work the dentist will be performing on your teeth, additional anesthetic or numbing medication will still need to be used at the sight. For example, most people who have had a tooth filling must first have part of the tooth drilled and cleaned in preparation. Due to the nerves that exist within each tooth, this can be a painful process and is not recommended without a numbing agent. Both numbing medications and sedation medications are used, both performing separate tasks. One makes operating a less painful process, the other allowing for a more pleasant experience for the patient.
